Dream You Are Still Able To Dream Elita Sohmer Clayman
Dreaming is nice even when they are dreams of anticipating things you can attain.
There is a one armed golfer here in Baltimore County. His name is Vince Biser and he does very well playing golf. He says “don’t give up on your dreams.” He has not.
Many dreams, we have only remain dreams. That is it.Some of us cannot realize them, because we do not have the time or money to invest in them. Others feel it is too late and others do not have the mental strength to try to accomplish them.
I know of a lady who loved to dance and when she lost both of her legs due to Diabetes, she would still go in her wheelchair to an affair, she was invited to and when the orchestra or disc jockey played music, she rolled her chair out there and her husband twirled her around and they ‘danced.’ She had a smile on her face and her eyes sparkled and she was dancing. Of course, it was not the traditional way, but she still was inspired enough to continue on. Her name was Bonnie Sue.

My deaf uncle could still enjoy television, because he would watch it and if it had close captioned wording below it, you could hear his joyful glee and see his beautiful smile. His name was Uncle Mike.
My blind uncle could listen to the radio, TV and best of all he could play the piano by what is called ‘ear.’ He could hear it and automatically find the right keys on the piano and play the song better than we kids could do with sheet music. His name was Uncle George.

My friend has lost her hair due to chemo. She wears beautiful wigs, goes out to parties and is the joy of the party, because she does not let her scalp dictate her happiness. Her name is Dorothy.
My aunt could not see and you should have seen the beautiful dresses, skirts and blouses she knitted all without seeing the yarn. She knitted in patterns, stripes and different colors. She could feel the color by the weight of the yarn. Everyone admired her wearing her own knitting creations. Her name was Aunt Ruth.
An acquaintance of mine cannot eat lots of food because she has stomach problems. She still goes to parties and eats the food she can tolerate for that evening and moves the other food around in the plate to give the appearance that she is eating, so others will not comment on it. She has a good time and her name is Valerie.
A friend who has since passed on had terrible hip problems and could no longer dance. She came to the dances with her husband and she sat and socialized with the other people and maybe, once got up to dance because of her aching hips. She still had enjoyment being away a few hours from the retirement home they lived in. Her name was Neala.
A lady I know can no longer knit and knitting was the love of her life and she also made a small living at it. She has trouble with her hands and cannot hold the knitting needles. She still takes orders for knitting jobs like baby sweaters, and men’s sweaters. She hired another lady to do the knitting, splits the profits and keeps her ‘hands’ in the knitting event. That makes her feel a part of being a knitter, even though she can no longer physically do it. Her name is Theresa Anne.
We should all try to continue on with doing the things we love. When it gets difficult, we can apply another version of that same hobby or job and see if that can work to let us stay in the same vocation or hobby. It may not be easy to get this done; but we can certainly invent other ways to accomplish this in a different form. The people mentioned above try and tried to overcome their limitations and most of them did do that. They did not give up and are still involved in the same activity, one way or the other.
Attempting doing something, trying real hard and maybe substituting something else of the same enterprise or adventure is ‘taking a shot’ at it and perhaps attaining it. I know of a lady who has had lots of stomach problems and has to watch her Glucose and Carb levels a lot, even though she is very slender. She went on a motorcycle ride holding onto her husband as they drove for two and half hours to the DC area to be a part of a celebration over the Memorial Day weekend. You have to admire someone like that, who with some health problems; achieved and realized this wonderful time. Her name is Debby.
So to all mentioned above and even to me, who with aching knees and I am going to dance on June 9th at a dance competition, I am reviewing and I am going to write an article for Cockeysville.Patch.com about it. Bravo to all of us for being special people, men and women, who do not let anything get in the way of our DREAMS.
When we were little kids, we had many dreams, dreams of being beautiful, smart, well to do and most of all happy. I think we have all realized that and even if our health is not always the best, we are still here, relatively healthy and most of all, we have excitement in our minds and hearts and we still have dreams. My dreams were to write and dance. That I will do next Saturday June 9th and I am doing every time, I write an article. Bravo to Dreams and continue to dream on, regardless of your AGE. Dream you are still able to dream.
