Penn State joins U of Miami, USC, U of Washington, Et al---But That's Football

An opinion on the Penn State child abuse scandal

It's nasty that Joe Paterno too has "feet of clay."  But as for the child abuse scandal that erupted at Penn State, that's football.  Over the years football has been the excuse for covering-up drug abuse, rapes, assaults, larcenies, and even murders. So what's all the flap about 40 or so instances of child abuse by a defensive coordinator--hey, that's football. And now Penn State joins the likes of USC, U of Miami, U of Washington, Auburn, Florida State, Boise State, Ohio State, et al who have devised cover-up schemes.

Maybe the sports world along with colleges and universities should turn down the volume on football. Do we really need on TV all day Sunday football, Monday night football, Tuesday and Wednesday re-run football, Thursday night football, Friday night football, Saturday all day football and ESPN's high school football?

Remember the days when cities and states were judged by their educational systems? Not anymore, it's their college and professional football teams and their publicly furnished stadiums.

It appeared that two thousand (there are more than forty thousand students at PSU) Penn State "scholars" rioted because their football coach was fired, but they riot when then win and riot worse when they lose, but did that two thousand or did Joe Paterno vocalize any remorse for the children or families that were hurt? Nope.

So why is everyone weepy about Penn State?  Maybe it's because the sports writers, the football advocates, the TV football shills no longer have a "clean" football program or coach to idolize.
