Goodnight, Shoes

Kids literally do grow overnight.

My nearly four-year-old daughter at 5:15 a.m. one day last week with the breaking news that her big toe hurt. Sure enough, when I took a look, it was pretty red and puffy.

This was sad for a couple reasons, one of which being that this proclamation (and it was a proclamation) came a half-hour before my first alarm goes off. Second, and I probably should have said it first to make myself look more magnanimous, my child was in pain.

It was a relatively minor injury in the grand scheme of things, more akin to a boo-boo than an actual illness of any kind. The cause of the bum toe? Too short footie pajamas, and as we found out later that day, sneakers that were way too small. The PJs were kind of old, so that they are now too short to wear comfortably this season isn’t a shocker. But the too small sneakers took me by surprise. I think we just had her fitted for those shoes in August, and already they are made for a much smaller kid.

So I guess it’s safe to say we are in the middle of a growth spurt. I haven’t seen her go through clothes and shoes at a rate like this since , when every bottle seemed to boost growth exponentially. Now she’s so picky that she hardly eats anything, and yet Lucy is growing like a weed.

The good news this time around is that she wanted the same sneakers as she picked out in August, just in a different color (brown is the new pink, in case you are wondering), and now they happen to be on sale because they are last-season’s style. The bad news is that she is, as the cliché goes, growing up too fast. Too small PJs and shoes are only the beginning, I know.
