📰 News we're reading

• Hyattsville's latest general fund balance is 71% lower than previously thought, audit shows (thebanner.com) — Hyattsville's latest audit shows the city's general fund balance plunged from $24.5 million to under $7 million in one year, sharply shrinking its cushion for daily operations. City leaders insist there's no missing money, blaming accounting methods, while critics demand the treasurer and city administrator be removed and warn past budgets relied on overly rosy numbers. Future spending decisions and leadership changes are now under intense scrutiny.

• Tobias Dorzon will close Hyattsville's Huncho House (thebanner.com) — A well-known Hyattsville restaurant, Huncho House, will serve its last meals this Sunday before the concept relocates to Miami, ending a short but high-profile run in the city. Chef-owner Tobias Dorzon, a Prince George's County native who survived a 2024 shooting in Hyattsville, says he hopes to return to the area someday, leaving locals wondering what will replace the popular spot.

• Tax Fraud Blotter: Get your stolen checks here (accountingtoday.com) — A Hyattsville woman, Carmen Hernandez, pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to commit wire fraud in a scheme that secured more than $2.3 million in fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program loans. Her Silver Spring-based tax preparation business allegedly submitted at least 120 bogus applications, including two for herself, and she now faces up to 20 years in prison. The case appears in a broader roundup of tax and fraud prosecutions nationwide.
