Hyattsville 2.0 v.6

Short one this week, but some fun exploring the HOPE listserv and a few other areas of the World Wide Web! Can you find the reference to the photo?

Hyattsville 2.0 v.6

If you are reading this, you obviously did not melt last week or get pelted to death with hail! It sure did keep the pool warm, though, which is usually pretty darn chilly at the beginning of the year. Since it’s so nice out now, I've done a "short" blog this week so you can go out and enjoy the weather.

HOPE listserv

  1. Green Posting - Plant a tree for free! Click on this link and then click on “Start Here.”  We like trees (check out first quote).
  2.  Hooray, Hyattsville Farmers Market Opens June 14! The HyattsvilleWiki lists all of the local farmers markets and has links to some other great local eating items.
  3. I like the fact that the HOPE listserv has so many different functions. Some people use it like the yellow pages – this week “looking for” includes AC installers, AC Window Units and Emergency Medical Clinics …
  4. … Others use it as a “freecycle” program – this week giving away a couch, potatoes, day lilies and extra seeds and seedlings …
  5. … While others use it as a local search engine – this week’s questions include tipping cleaners and how to throw out old lumber.

If you are a registered YahooGroups user, you can log onto the HOPE listserv, click on “Messages” on the left hand side and you can search what you are looking for. Chances are, it’s been asked before. This is a great resource.

Facebook

  1. Things are heating up on the Arts District Hyattsville page over proposed parking changes over at the EYA west side area. One posting had 80 (eighty!) comments which I have never seen before on a posting that did not come from NPR or the like.
  2. A couple different posts about the “Dogs for the Arts” event in Magruder park on Saturday, June 4, starting a 9:30 a.m. If you have a dog, or just want to see a bunch of them, head on down. Hey doggie owners, don’t forget to pick up the poop!

YouTube

  1.  The only “real” video that has our fair city in it this week was this “puppet at car wash” episode. Not quite sure the reasoning behind it or what it was trying to accomplish, but hey, that was definitely the Enterprise Rental on Route 1.
  2. The Archives and Records Administration has been putting out a lot of really cool videos from long ago (hence “archive”) each week. They list themselves as being in Hyattsville but more like College Park.

The Google

Most of the info this week was already covered in the Hyattsville Patch. I’ll give the Patch a quick plug because it really is another great resource in the community. If you have not signed up for the daily email, you should do so to stay informed about what is happening in Hyattsville.
