Crazy Weekend in Hyattsville for Firefighters

Hyattsville volunteer firefighters responded to three fires in a 24-hour window.

The Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department had quite the weekend, responding to three fires in a 24-hour period. It all started at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30 when a house fire was reported at 3905 48th Street in Bladensburg. Crews arrived to find the house smoking.

"Crews operated for just under an hour before returning to service, performing searches, opening up and standing by with an additional attack line," according to a report from the fire department.

Less than 10 hours later, the fire department was alerted to a house fire at 5014 Tuckerman Street in Riverdale.

"The Truck crew entered to find fire in the kitchen rapidly extending," the report notes. "Truck 1 assisted the engine companies opening up the kitchen area ceiling and the walls and conducted searches along with Truck 9. The outside crew threw ladders, went to the roof and assisted with outside ventilation."

The company returned to service at around 1:30 p.m.

Finally, at around 1:42 a.m. on Sunday, July 31, the fire department responded to a reported house fire at 4912 Riverdale Road in Riverdale, finding a two-story single-family home with smoke showing.

"The engine, responding as second due, picked up Engine 7’s line and pulled a line to Division 1," the report states. "Truck 1, first due special service, operated on Division 1 and searched."
