Antique of the Week: French-Style Drawers

Well-maintained French Style of Drawers made by The Winnebago Furniture Company in the '20s.

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride. Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more. This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week, we are featuring a French style walnut chest of drawers at . John Booker, the proprietor, said, “It looks like two separate pieces, but it’s one.” The drawers were created during the booming economy of the 1920s by The Winnebago Furniture Company when Art Deco was the fad, but this piece harkens back to the European style before the Industrial Revolution.

During the 1920s, people could afford to invest in solid furniture, and walnut is known for lasting a lifetime as long as it is well maintained, according to Larry Frye, the executive director of the American Walnut Manufacturers Association.

This chest of drawers is in excellent condition, according to Booker, and it is currently being sold for $995 at Antiques & Uniques, located at 3762 B Howard Ave. Interested parties can inquire about the chest at 301-942-3324.
