Most skin problems are caused by allergies. You may notice your dog licking her paws, or scratching and rubbing his face. Excessive scratching in particular can be harmful for your dog, as it can be destructive and cause an infection. These symptoms alone do not always point to an allergy, so it's important to consult your veterinarian.

What types of allergies do dogs have?

Unfortunately, there's little limit to dog allergies. Allergens can be inhaled, such as pollen or mold. Your dog could also be irritated by something on their skin, such as fabrics, plastics, plants or chemicals. Developing an allergy to wheat, milk, beef, or soy are the most common food allergies.

Are some breeds more prone to allergies than others?

Purebreds and mixed breeds alike can be affected by allergies, and none are immune.

Is there anything I can do at home to alleviate the symptoms?

Your veterinarian may suggest altering your pet's diet as an initial step. A fatty acid supplement can help reduce inflammation or other signs of allergies.  Request a soothing oatmeal bath for your dog's next spa day, or pick up a bottle of hypoallergenic shampoo.
