Map and Compass Class in Rock Creek Park- Free!
Map and Compass Class in Rock Creek Park

Join Rock Creek Conservancy and instructors from the REI Outdoor School and we’ll help you see three dimensions of the land in the two dimensions of a topographic map. Your instructors will teach you how to read contour lines, landmarks and other map features. We’ll also talk about the compass, magnetic north, true north, and magnetic variation (declination), and help you make sense of it all. From there, you’ll learn how to take a bearing from the terrain and your map so that you can triangulate your position and plan a route. We’ll spend the afternoon putting all that learning to use as we navigate through the park. Maps and compasses will be provided.
When: Sunday, October 5th from 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Where: We will be meeting at the Rock Creek Park Nature Center located at 5200 Glover Road NW, Washington, D.C. 20015. We will be meeting in the grassy areas in between the front and back parking lot near the picnic tables.
