Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. A reward of up to $50,000 for information about a letter carrier robbery in Laurel earlier this month, will be offered by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to the person who shares that information with the agency. According to a news release, the letter carrier was robbed at gunpoint at the Arden Pointe Apartments at 8703 Dulwick Court on Sept. 2. (Baltimore Sun)
  2. The University System of Maryland's COVID-19 vaccine mandate is being challenged with a lawsuit that was filed last week in U.S. District Court in Baltimore. The lawsuit states that the requirement that all students, faculty and staff get vaccinated violates several of their rights, including their right to reject medical treatment. (WTOP)
  3. Bold Leader had three things working against him in his debut August 21: a six-furlong distance that was perhaps too short; a sluggish break that left him too much to do; and the presence of H P Moon, one of the most impressive juveniles to race in Maryland this year.
Yet he overcame the odds and achieved success on Sept. 19 at Laurel Park, when he powered to a two-length score in a one-mile maiden event for two-year-olds. (theracingbiz.com)
  4. Governor Larry Hogan awarded $3 million yesterday to protect more than 30 Maryland organizations and religious institutions against hate crimes. The Protecting Against Hate Crimes (PAHC) program provided the funding. Gov. Hogan called hate, bigotry and racism "un-American" and said that this funding will be "used to prevent future hate-fueled attacks and help us send a clear message that we stand shoulder to shoulder against all forms of discrimination." The Hogan administration has provided more than $8 million to protect vulnerable groups from hate crimes through PAHC since 2019. (Maryland.gov)
