911 Call Centers Upgrade + Penguin Random House Creates New Jobs

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

  1. Prince George's County has completed upgrades to its emergency communications infrastructure, which is part of a nationwide effort to upgrade all 911 call centers in an ever-increasing wireless mobile society. Next Generation 911 is in the process of revamping emergency systems across the U.S. and Canada. (WTOP)
  2. Governor Larry Hogan announced on August 25 that Penguin Random House, the renowned book publisher home to more than 300 international publishing imprints, has expanded its presence in Maryland with the opening of a second distribution center in Carroll County. Over time, Penguin Random House plans to create 150 new full-time jobs at the facility, increasing its total employment number to 870 workers in Maryland. (Maryland.gov)
  3. University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), Maryland's largest health system, has been on the front lines of fighting the pandemic, treating over 13,000 COVID-19 patients. Following the announcement that the Pfizer vaccine was approved by the FDA, UMMS is hoping that this will encourage more people to get vaccinated. (WDVM)

  • ONLINE TALK: Jacob Lawrence and the Haitian Revolution — Join Albuquerque Museum Curator of Art Josie Lopez, PhD for a talk on Toussaint L'Ouverture, a series of work by the artist Jacob Lawrence (b. 1917 Atlantic City, d. 2000 Seattle). The series chronicles Toussaint's exploits in commanding the slave revolt that led to Haiti's emancipation from European rule in 1804, thereby establishing the first Black republic in the Western Hemisphere.   • Uhuru Quilters Guild Exhibit — Montpelier House Museum presents the latest creations of the Uhuru Quilters Guild. Come see these beautiful works, a mix of full size and challenge size quilts featuring traditional as well as original designs. The Uhuru Quilters Guild seeks to promote the work and accomplishments of African American quilters and to preserve the tradition, culture and history of quilting. (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
