Here are the top three stories today in Laurel:

  1. Prince George County police have charged a 17-year-old with the murder of a 33-year-old man in Laurel last month. Police said officers responded to a call at 1 p.m. on July 24 in the 13300 block of Laurel Bowie Road for a reported shooting. Upon arriving, officers discovered Antoine Riley, of Laurel, outside suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. (Baltimore Sun)
  2. A group from Johns Hopkins University won Innovative Team of the Year 2021. Before many Americans were fully aware of the looming pandemic, a team at the Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel was already working with others at the university to build a dashboard with up-to-date data on the spread of COVID-19. Beginning in January 2020, the group created the most visible feature of the university’s Coronavirus Research Center. (Fast Company)
  3. A group of fifth to seventh graders from Howard, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, who are participants of Laurel Historical Society’s weeklong summer archaeology camp, met Monday for a virtual introduction and archaeology lesson by Ann Bennett, executive director of the society. Then, on Tuesday morning, 10 kids gathered at the Laurel Museum for a lesson on artifacts before heading to their main event: an archaeological dig. (Baltimore Sun)
