Here are the top three stories today in Laurel:
- Prince George County police have charged a 17-year-old with the murder of a 33-year-old man in Laurel last month. Police said officers responded to a call at 1 p.m. on July 24 in the 13300 block of Laurel Bowie Road for a reported shooting. Upon arriving, officers discovered Antoine Riley, of Laurel, outside suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. (Baltimore Sun)
- A group from Johns Hopkins University won Innovative Team of the Year 2021. Before many Americans were fully aware of the looming pandemic, a team at the Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel was already working with others at the university to build a dashboard with up-to-date data on the spread of COVID-19. Beginning in January 2020, the group created the most visible feature of the university's Coronavirus Research Center. (Fast Company)
- A group of fifth to seventh graders from Howard, Prince George's and Montgomery counties, who are participants of Laurel Historical Society's weeklong summer archaeology camp, met Monday for a virtual introduction and archaeology lesson by Ann Bennett, executive director of the society. Then, on Tuesday morning, 10 kids gathered at the Laurel Museum for a lesson on artifacts before heading to their main event: an archaeological dig. (Baltimore Sun)

- Bike Safe, Bike Smart! — Attend this event for a bike safety program to learn tips on safety riding, proper helmet fitting, plus decorating your bike. Limited free helmets for kids! Bring your own bike too. (2:00 p.m.)
- Author Works: Gail Tsukiyama — In "The Color of Air," Tsukiyama has created a community with characters who meet difficulties and persist with grace and endurance; whose dependence on one another is, in fact, their greatest strength. A rich historical novel that illustrates why connection is more important and more vital than ever. (7:00 p.m.)
- Heritage Film Festival Teaser #2: Coronavirus 2020 — PGCC student Keith Young presents a timely, thought provoking, down to earth documentary that shares the thoughts and fears many have about the pandemic. The film has a runtime of 30 minutes and is followed by a Q&A with the director. Filmed in Spring 2020. (7:00 p.m.)

- Uhuru Quilters Guild Exhibit — Montpelier House Museum presents the latest creations of the Uhuru Quilters Guild. Come see these beautiful works, a mix of full size and challenge size quilts featuring traditional as well as original designs. The Uhuru Quilters Guild seeks to promote the work and accomplishments of African American quilters and to preserve the tradition, culture and history of quilting. (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
