• Maryland Family Demands Answers After Peruvian Father Dies in ICE Custody (nbcpalmsprings.com) — A longtime Laurel resident, Julian Curo-Churata, died in ICE custody after being detained in June, and his family and local advocates are demanding a full investigation into what happened. His wife and community groups in Maryland, including CASA, are pressing federal officials for answers about his medical care and cause of death. A vigil in Laurel will honor his life and support his grieving family.
• Driver accused of killing Maryland woman in DC park hit-and-run charged with murder (shorenewsnetwork.com) — A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the hit-and-run crash that killed 45-year-old Shana Battle of Laurel in a Northeast DC park in July. Investigators say the driver fled after an SUV struck her in a park off South Dakota Avenue NE. Months later, a regional fugitive task force arrested the suspect, and DC police are still asking witnesses to come forward.
• State Roundup: Maryland Fails Many Who Seek Protective Orders; Most Marylanders Oppose All Data Centers; US Wind To Leave Sparrows Point After OC Project Falters (citybiz.co) — Among several statewide stories, Maryland outlets report that a 47-year-old man who lived in Laurel for about 17 years died in ICE custody after being detained in June. The roundup also covers failures in protective orders, strong public opposition to data centers, workplace safety penalties, and political and defense developments that could indirectly affect Laurel residents.
