• Maryland Family Demands Answers After Peruvian Father Dies in ICE Custody (nbcpalmsprings.com) — A longtime Laurel resident, Julian Curo-Churata, died in ICE custody after being detained in June, and his family and local advocates are demanding a full investigation into what happened. His wife and community groups in Maryland, including CASA, are pressing federal officials for answers about his medical care and cause of death. A vigil in Laurel will honor his life and support his grieving family.
   

• Driver accused of killing Maryland woman in DC park hit-and-run charged with murder (shorenewsnetwork.com) — A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the hit-and-run crash that killed 45-year-old Shana Battle of Laurel in a Northeast DC park in July. Investigators say the driver fled after an SUV struck her in a park off South Dakota Avenue NE. Months later, a regional fugitive task force arrested the suspect, and DC police are still asking witnesses to come forward.
