Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

1. Laurel remembers Everard E. Hatch, Laurel’s Depression-era mayor and retired Army general. Hatch waged an unrelenting campaign against lawlessness. He had a no-nonsense style of communicating that resonated with voters, who elected him to two terms as mayor. A week after the election of his successor, Hatch was admitted to Walter Reed Hospital with an undisclosed illness. Three weeks later, the general died. But the legacy of his remarkable career lives on. (Baltimore Sun)

2. Mosquito season is almost here and the City of Laurel is prepared to participate in the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Mosquito Control Program. Spray season started on May 26 and will continue through September 28. Laurel’s day for spraying is Sunday. The spray schedule will rotate every three weeks, meaning your community may or may not be sprayed every three weeks. The frequency will be determined by surveillance data collected, and complaints. Spraying will start as soon as it is dark. Residents are advised to stay inside their homes and close their windows while the spray truck is in the vicinity, bring in any pets, and remain in the home for 20-30 minutes after the spray truck has passed by. 3. According to Jacob Baumgart, Patch reporter, officials said a judge on May 12 sentenced a Laurel woman to 13 months in prison. Prosecutors accused the suspect, 52-year-old Folashade Adufe Horne, of defrauding the Washington, D.C. Medicaid program of $373,564. An incident report noted that Horne pleaded guilty to health care fraud in February. The press release added that Horne must repay Medicaid in full and face a $267,567 forfeiture money judgment.
