🌱 Hope For Mentally Ill And Substance Abuse + Winter Weather

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Laurel.

(Patch Media)

Hey, neighbors! Alexis Goring here with today's issue of the Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather:

An a.m. rain or snow shower. High: 38 Low: 29.

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. We're experiencing more winter weather after the snowfall yesterday. Forecasters said precipitation will shift to freezing rain and sleet along the Interstate 95 corridor. Therefore, Governor Larry Hogan asked people to stay off the roads. Projected snow totals for central Maryland called for about 2 to 4 inches with up to 6 inches possible. (Patch)
  2. The Hope Center that offers support to people seeking assistance with mental health or substance use issues in Prince George's County. They want people who are facing mental health challenges to know that they not alone. This is why the People Like Us Campaign is working to aid anyone who might not be getting help they need, such as adolescents, seniors, first responders and people who are bilingual. All are welcome, regardless of the ability to pay or insurance status. (WTOP)
  3. According to a recent report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth slowed near the end of 2021, but the USA is within striking distance of pre-pandemic unemployment levels. Nationally, employment rose by 199,000 jobs in December, and the unemployment rate dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 3.9 percent when seasonally adjusted. The total number of jobs added was the lowest of any month in 2021. (Laurel Patch)
  4. Juvenile stakes winners Cooke Creek, Joe, Local Motive, Shake Em Loose and Witty, along with H P Moon, are among 24 horses nominated to the $100,000 Saturday, Jan. 29 Spectacular Bid at Laurel Park. The seven-furlong Spectacular Bid is one of six stakes worth $550,000 in purses set to kick off Maryland's 2022 stakes calendar. It is the first in Maryland's series of stakes for 3-year-olds on dirt, followed by the one-mile Miracle Wood Feb. 19, 1 1/16-mile Private Terms March 19 and 1 1/8-mile Federico Tesio April 16. Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! I hope you enjoy this holiday edition of the Laurel Daily. Please know that, like most of you, I will be taking the day off from work to enjoy this holiday. So there will not be a newsletter in your inbox tomorrow. We hope you all understand the slight pause in the Laurel Daily. But don't worry, we will be back to our normal routine Wednesday morning!
