Laurel Council Roundup: A New Playground and Rain Garden for the City?

Five things to know from last night's council work session.

  1. Is a new roof job in the works for the ? During a work session meeting Wednesday, city officials were weighing their options to make repairs to portions of the municipal center roof that are badly in need of repair, including sections directly above Mayor Craig Moe’s office. Officials hope the repairs would starve renovating the entire roof, which could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  2. New playground equipment is on its way to the Cypress Street Field. City planners have been continuing their efforts to replace equipment in all city parks over the last 10 years. Planners said the new equipment is expected to cost $150,000.
  3. Could environmentally friendly rain gardens keep Discovery Park from flooding? According to city planners, installing rain gardens at locations in the park could help save the park from elevated water levels. Rain gardens are planted vegetation that absorb excess moisture and pollutants caused by storm water runoff. The city will select a final bidder next week for the project, bids range from $23,000 to about $32,000.
  4. The Laurel Council is weighing its options to reduce tractor trailer traffic along Willow Oaks Community near Route 198 after residents have expressed safety concerns including adding a "No Thur Traffic" sign.
  5. The council will meet next Monday at the Laurel Municipal Center at 7 p.m. to introduce the legislation.
