Morning, Laurel! Let's get you all caught up to start this Wednesday off on an informed note. Here's everything going on today in town.

First, today's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 92 Low: 72.


Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

  1. According to preliminary data from the Office of Institutional Research, enrollment at the 12 University System of Maryland institutions is expected to remain level in the school year set to begin Aug. 30 at most college campuses. About 169,000 students are expected to be enrolled in the university system. COVID vaccines would be required for students. (WTOP)
  2. An inventor from Laurel created a reminder device for parents to remove their children or pets from the car upon parking. The inventor calls this device the "Vehicle Temperature Life Saving Device." It helps to ensure that a child or pet is removed from a parked car in a safe and timely manner. (KPVI News 6)
  3. Governor Larry Hogan joined CBS This Morning on August 24 to highlight Maryland's continued response to and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The governor also discussed the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and Maryland's commitment to resettling Afghan interpreters who aided America's efforts abroad. (Maryland.gov)
  4. Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett interviewed Governor Larry Hogan on CBS show Face The Nation on August 22 to discuss Maryland's response to COVID-19. Gov. Hogan pressed the federal government to advance full FDA approval of the vaccines, make booster shots available immediately for seniors and vulnerable populations, and expedite approval of vaccines for children ages 5 to 11.
