Local 'Moose' Sighting + MD Naval Academy New Mask Mandate

The quickest way to get caught up on everything happening in town today.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Laurel! Let's get you all caught up to start this Wednesday off on an informed note. Here are the most important things going on around Laurel today.

First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy throughout the day. High: 82 Low: 60.

Here are the top stories today in Laurel:

  1. On August 1, Canadian Smash Ultimate pro Michael 'Riddles' Kim managed to place fourth overall at The Comeback tournament event in Laurel. While the trip should have been done and over with, the result of Riddles' health test kept him stuck in the U.S. long enough for someone to steal his passport. (Dexerto)
  2. Severna Park residents were pleasantly surprised to see a familiar face recently turn up on the bench at the corner of Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard and Richie Highway. Severna Park native Arthur "Moose" Williams, a local homeless man who became a beloved icon, has been living with his brother in Laurel, since an extended hospitalization in January 2020. Williams needed time to fully recover and quarantine. When he returns to Laurel, he can be found at the intersection of Route 198 and Red Clay Road, in front of the 7-11. (Severna Park Voice)
  3. Almost all of Maryland's military installations including the Naval Academy are now requiring indoor mask-wearing regardless of vaccination status. The new mask mandate comes as a result of the Department of Defense's policy, which requires everyone to wear a mask indoors if the COVID-19 transmission rate is considered high or substantial.
