Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. Chesapeake Math and IT Public Charter, a large suburban school in Laurel, made the Top-Ranked Middle Schools in Maryland list by U.S. News & World Report. It serves serves children in grades K-12 and the student population is 1,664. (U.S. News & World Report)
  2. According to data recently released by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, Maryland's economy gained 14,900 jobs in October and the state's unemployment rate decreased from 5.9% to 5.7%. This means the state's unemployment rate is at its lowest level since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. (MarylandReporter.com)
  3. Laurel Park will launch the New Year 2022 with 17 stakes worth a total of $1.9 million in purses through the first three months of the new year. Stakes action begins on Jan. 22 with six stakes worth $550,000 in purses topped by the $100,000 Spectacular Bid sprinting seven furlongs. This will kick off the Maryland Jockey Club's series for 3-year-olds. (Past The Wire)
  4. The University of Maryland is being criticized for a controversial graphic representing student race and ethnicity data. The controversy centers on part of the graphic that was labeled "students of color minus Asians" and the other part that was labeled "white or Asian students." This graphic caused great offense. It was part of the admissions and enrollment section of the State of Campus address made by University of Maryland President Daryll Pines to the University Senate. (WTOP)

  • Laurel High School & Laurel Greene Turtle Thanksgiving Eve Reunion — Remember the good old days when everyone would gather at the Laurel Greene Turtle on Thanksgiving Eve and you would see people from all Laurel High School classes like it was a Laurel High School reunion? This Thanksgiving even Nuzback's Bar wants to recreate that fun nostalgic night, featuring the Legendary DJ Birdman! (9:00 p.m.)
  • Red Cross FA/CPR/AED Class — Knights of Pythias Lodge will host this event. (6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.)
  • Full Moon Plant Yoga (flow) —A flow practice taking time for deep breaths in each asana and listening to the body in full awareness. Timeless posture sequences focusing on strength with the possibility of building a little heat. Encouraging mindful breathing in relation to lengthening and deepening each stretch. Connection to nature will be explored with seasonal lore, rhythms, and the sacred teachings of plants. (6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.)
  • Auricular Acupuncture at MUIH Main Campus — Master's level acupuncture students, under supervision by licensed and experienced faculty, are providing safe and effective auricular treatments.
