New Laurel Medical Center Construction + Accidental Death

Welcome to the Laurel Daily! Here you will find fun events going on this week including an update about the new Laurel Medical Center, a local resident’s accidental death, and how members of a local church blessed the executive director of Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services in a way that will support COVID relief efforts.

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

1. On May 12, members of Laurel Presbyterian Church donated $40,000 to Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services (LARS), which provides assistance to low-income households in the Laurel area. It was one of the largest single private donations the group has received in the past decade. Leah Paley, executive director of LARS, was pleasantly surprised. The funds will support COVID relief efforts at LARS. (Baltimore Sun)

2. Laurel resident Latisha Monica Adams, 33, was shot and killed Wednesday while she rode in the passenger seat of the car that her boyfriend was driving. She was about five months pregnant at the time. According to Anne Arundel County police, Ronald William Smith, a 48-year-old man from Laurel, rode in the back seat with a handgun. As Smith manipulated the handgun, it fired one round through the seat and into Adams, resulting in her death. (Baltimore Sun)

3. UMMS University of Maryland Laurel Medical Center construction is underway! Mayor Craig A. Moe, county members and elected officials worked hard to ensure a medical facility stayed on that piece of land. They are pleased to see the construction work begin towards a new medical center for Laurel.   • Cicadafest 2021 - The Green Farmacy Garden in Fulton Maryland welcomes you to celebrate living within periodical cicadas' range by enjoying the abundance of Brood X. This celebration will center around a Cicada sampling. Attendees will be invited to sample different preparations of cicadas, including grilled, sautéed, and chocolate-covered.
