Six new principals serving in Catholic schools in Archdiocese of Washington (cathstan.org) — Families at St. Mary of the Mills School in Laurel will see a new face leading the halls this year, as longtime Catholic educator and parishioner Nicholas Caputo becomes principal for 2026–27. With more than two decades of teaching and administrative experience across Maryland Catholic schools, he's expected to strengthen academics and faith life for students and parish families.

2. City to Commemorate 25th Anniversary of September 11 'Together, We Remember. Together, We Stand." (cityoflaurel.org) — Laurel will host a 25th anniversary 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, from 6–7:30 p.m. at the Laurel Municipal Center, featuring music, reflections, a memorial walk, and wreath-laying at the city's 9/11 memorial. Residents are also invited to a Laurel Historical Society program the evening before, with exhibits and personal recollections of that day.

3. MARC Train introducing new service between Montgomery County, Baltimore (wtop.com) — Laurel riders will soon get a new direct weekday MARC connection linking the town with Baltimore and several Montgomery County stations starting September 28, significantly cutting travel times. One morning train will head toward Baltimore and one evening train will return, with schedule adjustments on the Brunswick and Camden lines to accommodate the added service.

4. Researchers develop new heatsink using additive manufacturing (techxplore.com) — Engineers at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in Laurel are developing compact, 3D-printed phase-change heatsinks that manage intense bursts of heat more efficiently than traditional metal designs. Their SPEAR system has already been built and tested in-house, showing big reductions in size and weight while maintaining performance. The work could benefit aerospace, defense, and other high-power electronics.
