📰 News we're reading

• New MARC train service offers Brunswick-Baltimore connection for UMD commuters (dbknews.com) — Laurel riders now have a new MARC option that links Frederick County's Brunswick station to Baltimore's Camden station, with trains stopping in Laurel on weekday mornings and evenings. The line, launched September 28, offers a faster alternative to driving through construction and traffic, especially for University of Maryland commuters, and currently includes a promotional fare discount through March.

• Addressing the organ transplant shortage: SURPASS project tackles the 'beyond possible' (jhu.edu) — A major Johns Hopkins research initiative based at the Applied Physics Lab in Laurel is funding a new project to develop autonomous robotic surgery for organ transplants, potentially easing the national organ shortage. Laurel-based scientists are partnering with engineers and surgeons across the university to automate parts of xenotransplantation, with hopes of expanding access to complex surgery, especially in underserved communities, over the coming years.

• Anne Arundel Republican pushes tougher ethics rules for officials, developers (thebanner.com) — Laurel resident and Anne Arundel Council Chair Julie Hummer is weighing in as a Republican colleague pushes three bills to tighten ethics rules, including fines up to $5,000 and new limits on developer donations. The proposals, sparked partly by past disputes over County Executive Steuart Pittman's newsletter, could reshape how county officials handle conflicts of interest and political contributions ahead of November's elections.
