Sports Betting Law + Boy Almost Drowns In Six Flags America Pool

Your five-minute guide to everything worth knowing around town today.

(Patch Media)

Happy Monday, Laurel! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather: Rain throughout the day. High: 81 Low: 70.

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. When state lawmakers debated sports betting legislation earlier this year, they hoped that Marylanders would be legally allowed to place wagers by the time the NFL season kicked off in September. However, they realized that it's going to be several months before the state's first sportsbooks will be able to accept bets. Gov. Larry Hogan, who signed the sports betting law in May, told Maryland Matters in a recent interview that he has leaned on the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency to move as quickly as possible. (Maryland Matters)
  2. With U.S. troops having left Afghanistan after nearly two decades of fighting in the region, many veterans who served in combat deployments are reportedly struggling with poor mental health and struggling to make sense of it all as they watch the Taliban retake the country.
According to Sarah Verardo, Chief Executive Officer of the Independence Fund, military troop leaders, veterans and spouses say they are feeling angry, isolated, and demoralized as they watch the latest developments unfold in Afghanistan. (WSFX)
  3. A boy who was given CPR after he was found in a pool at Six Flags America amusement park in Prince George's County Saturday afternoon, is now in stable condition. The incident happened in the Hurricane Harbor Water Park section of the park. (WTOP)
  4. Despite a plea from County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks, the Maryland State Board of Education said this week it is unable to review ethics allegations against several members of the Prince George's County school board. The state board said it "has been advised that the report is confidential until accepted by the local board of education," and thus cannot pursue the matter. (WTOP)
