Students Subject To COVID Random Pool Testing + Fall Festival

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. Maryland Restaurant Week, hosted by the Restaurant Association of Maryland, runs from Sept. 17- Sept. 26. This event was created to help eateries suffering from negative effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. For ten days, participating businesses may offer special menus, discounts or seasonal fare for dine-in, curbside, or carryout. (WEAA)
  2. The Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championships Series (MATCH) returns to Laurel Park today with four stakes and multiple opportunities for horses to solidify their positions in the 2021 standings. The two sprint stakes are the fifth of six in their divisions. The other two are the fourth of six in their divisions. The 11-race program kicks off at 12:40 p.m. (Paulick Report)
  3. Maryland's Board of Public Works approved a major payment to the consortium building the Purple Line on Wednesday. The state's top transportation official insisted the payout will save taxpayers money in the long run. When completed, the 16-mile line will connect the inner-suburbs of Montgomery County and Prince George's County, with several stops near the University of Maryland College Park. (WTOP)
  4. On Sept. 10, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Monica Goldson announced new health and safety guidelines for students of Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS). Beginning the week of Sept. 27, schools will begin random pool testing of students regardless of symptoms and vaccination status. The school system currently tests any individual who displays symptoms of COVID-19. Parents and guardians are required to provide consent prior to testing. Approximately 10 percent of students with consent forms on file will be tested. Staring Oct. 18, unvaccinated individuals will be required to undergo weekly testing. (PGCPS)

  • Laurel Police Department: The Laurel Police Department is asking the public for any information they may have in an abduction, home invasion and armed robbery. (Facebook)
  • City of Laurel: Mayor Craig A. Moe and Public Works Director Brian Lee announced that effective on Oct. 11, City of Laurel residents, businesses and associations requesting Department of Public Works bulky item collections of mattresses and box springs will be required to completely cover them with a mattress cover or a protective plastic covering. If you have any questions about this new policy, please call 301-725-0088 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. (City of Laurel)
