Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. Students in Prince George's County are among the last to wrap up summer break and they must follow some strict new COVID-19 guidelines upon returning to school. Masks are required for every person inside of all buildings, on all school buses and when students are outside for recess. Teachers and staff are required to show proof of vaccination or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing. (WUSA9.com)
  2. Charlie Marquez always wanted to be a jockey from the time he would visit Pimlico with his mother on Preakness Day. Now, his dream is coming true as he has become known as a "teenage riding sensation." Marquez, age 18, finished his first full professional season as Maryland's leading apprentice rider of 2020 with 58 wins. He earned his first career meet title at Pimlico. Marquez has won more races than any rider in Maryland with 76. (Paulick Report)
  3. A dazzle (group) of three zebras is on the run in Prince George's County. They escaped from an Upper Marlboro zebra breeding farm at Bellefield and Duley Station Roads. And catching the zebra trio won't be like catching domestic animals, according to area Veterinarian Linda Molesworth, who owns a zebra. She said that you "cannot walk up and grab them". (WTOP)
  4. Governor Larry Hogan announced on Sept. 8 that the State of Maryland is immediately authorizing COVID-19 booster shots for all Marylanders 65 and older who are living in congregate care settings, including nursing homes, assisted living facilities, residential drug treatment centers, and developmentally disabled group homes.
