Washington Rookie Honors Local HS Coach + Laurel Boxer Main Event

Happy Monday, people of Laurel! Here's everything you need to know to get this day started off right. Here's everything going on today in Laurel.

Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

  1. Bowie State senior Kenny Amaya, along with juniors Joshua Pryor and Demetri Morsell were selected to the 2021 BOXTOROW HBCU College Football Preseason All-America Team. This news was announced on Aug. 5. BOXTOROW has administered the All-America team since 2007. The voters are comprised of media members from around the nation that cover HBCU football. (BSU Bulldogs)
  2. Washington rookie running back Jaret Patterson had a breakout performance in Friday's preseason game against the Bengals. Before running off the field, Patterson took his off his cleats and gave them to his former high school football coach Justin Winters. The undrafted rookie started on both sides of the ball all four years he attended St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel, where Winters was an assistant coach. (WTOP)
  3. Rising Star Promotions in association with Events DC are bringing boxing back to D.C. on Sept. 4 with Beltway Battles: The Inauguration, the first in a series of events to be held at the District's Entertainment & Sports Arena. With local favorite Dusty Hernandez Harrison sidelined with an injury, the 8-round, super middleweight bout between Laurel native Demond Nicholson and Decarlo Perez has been elevated to the main event. It's a high-stakes fight for both fighters. (BoxingScene.com)
  4. Governor Larry Hogan's emergency order in April 2020 cited the authority of the CDC in ordering the critically important and lifesaving indoor mask mandate. The governor lifted this mask mandate on May 15, again citing the updated CDC guidance. Now the Delta variant has hit, cases are on the rise, and CDC is telling us we need to bring back the masks.
