6-Year-Old Boy Killed In Montgomery Village Shooting: Police

The child involved in an accidental shooting in Montgomery Village on Tuesday was fatally shot in the face, police said.

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, MD — A child was killed Tuesday after being shot in the face in an accidental shooting that took place in Montgomery Village, police said.

Shiera Goff, a spokesperson with the Montgomery County Police Department, identified the child as a six-year-old boy during a news briefing held near the scene. Authorities have not released the child's name.

Goff said police and crews with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services were called to the 10100 block of Maple Leaf Drive around 2:45 p.m. for reports of a "code," which she said indicates an unresponsive person.

Despite life-saving measures, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. Goff said it is too early to say whether charges will be filed in the shooting.

No foul play is suspected in the case, which continues to be investigated as an accident. No additional details were provided about how the shooting occurred.

Crisis response teams remain at the scene.

"This was an isolated incident," Goff told reporters. "I really have no words."

Goff said one adult was in the home at the time of the shooting but did not indicate whether there were any other children present. It remains unclear who the firearm belonged to, or if it was licensed.
