Baby Dies As Mom Protests on Greenmount Avenue: Police

Police said an officer tried to resuscitate the 1-month-old baby girl.

BALTIMORE, MD — The medical examiner is investigating the death of an infant whose mother was protesting a police-involved shooting on Greenmount Avenue over the weekend.

A Baltimore policeman tried to save the baby by performing CPR, but she later died at the hospital.

At 3 p.m. on Saturday, approximately 30 people congregated in the 3300 block of Greenmount Avenue to hold a demonstration. Their protest was near the area where a man allegedly threatened people with knives at a bus stop Friday and was killed by police gunfire when he failed to follow orders to drop his weapons.

When he found the infant, Gibson began performing CPR since she was indeed not breathing, until paramedics arrived.

"According to witnesses at the scene, the infant's mother was one of the protestors and went into the restaurant to feed the infant. Once inside the restaurant, the infant stopped breathing," police said in a statement.

The 1-month-old baby was taken to an area hospital, where she later was pronounced deceased, according to officials, who said the medical examiner would determine the cause and manner of the child's death. It was unknown if there were preexisting medical conditions.

Police said the officers involved would receive counseling.
