Bernie Sanders Visiting West Baltimore This Week

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders to tour part of Charm City.

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is visiting Baltimore on Tuesday.

His visit will center in west Baltimore, where he will go on a walking tour and meet with African-American leaders to talk about “issues directly impacting the African-American community.” Rev. Jamal Bryant, leader of Empowerment Temple, will help lead the discussion.

Here is the agenda, according to Bernie Sanders 2016 campaign officials:

  • 8:45 a.m. Walking tour of Sandtown-Winchester
  • 9:20 a.m. Ecumenical round table discussion at Freddie Gray Empowerment Center, 1505 Eutaw Place, Baltimore
  • 10:50 a.m. Press conference

Sanders’ visit coincides with the trial for Officer William Porter, one of six Baltimore Police officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray, for whom the empowerment center is named.

The 25-year-old Gray, who grew up in west Baltimore, died in police custody in April. After his funeral, the city erupted into riots and looting.

Sanders, a Senator from Vermont, is making his whistle stop in Baltimore after TIME magazine announced Monday that readers named him their Person of the Year.

After leaving Baltimore on Tuesday, Sanders will appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, according to Deadline.
