Demonstrations for Freddie Gray Continue for Fourth Day

Demonstrators traveled from Presbury Street to the Baltimore Police Department’s Western District station Tuesday night, two days after the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray.
The Baltimore man died from a spinal injury Sunday that has prompted a police investigation, a federal civil rights probe and the suspension of six officers.

Police say they are determined to find out what happened on April 12 that caused Gray to be arrested and within an hour, to be hospitalized with an injury that resulted in his April 19 death.

Citizens have taken to the streets for the past several days, including the day before Gray died, demanding answers about his injury and arrest.

“All night, all day we will fight for Freddie Gray” was one of several chants that echoed through the streets of Baltimore during the demonstrations.
- TUESDAY, April 21: Hundreds marched from the area where Gray was arrested (Presbury and Mount streets) to the Western District at 1034 N. Mount Street. There was a candlelight vigil, moment of silence and a peaceful protest.
- MONDAY, April 20: Protesters congregated in front of Baltimore’s City Hall and the Western District, The Baltimore Sun reported, calling for the indictment of six officers involved in Gray’s arrest; according to the newspaper, there was one counter-protester.
- SUNDAY, April 19: Justice League NYC, a group marching from New York to the District of Columbia calling for reform around profiling, demonstrated outside the Western District Saturday and Sunday, according to the Daily Mail.
- SATURDAY, April 18: A pastor led a group from west Baltimore to the Western District headquarters, demanding answers about what caused Gray to land in the hospital in a coma, according to WJZ. By 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, Gray was dead.
“I know that when Mr. Gray was placed inside that [police transport] van, he was able to talk, he was upset,” Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez said during a press conference Monday, April 20. “And when Mr. Gray was taken out of that van, he did not talk and he could not breathe.”
Police will submit a report with the findings from the department’s investigation by May 1, which the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office will review to determine whether charges will be filed.
In the meantime, two more events are planned this week in Baltimore, according to ABC 2 News: On WEDNESDAY, April 22, there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church, 1373 N. Stricker Street; and on THURSDAY, April 23, there will be a 3:30 p.m. demonstration outside City Hall, 100 Holliday Street.
