Nonprofit Plans Hampden Traffic-Calming Mural

Residents are being asked to participate in an innovative traffic-calming program in Hampden.

The nonprofit ARTblocks wants to use murals pained on intersections as a way to slow traffic at the intersection of 36th Street and Falls Road.  

ARTblocks, is hosting a continuation of a Creative Placemaking Workshop tonight at 6:15 p.m. at the Hampden Family Center, 1104 W. 36^th St.

In November the organization and the Department of Transportation approached the Hampden Community Council about using murals for traffic calming. At that time the department said the murals have proven to slow traffic at intersections.

The murals also must follow rules, such as they cannot display gratuitous acts of violence or be overtly religious, so they don’t distract motorist or lure pedestrians into the street. The murals also must be cost neutral to the city.
