Skatepark of Baltimore Reaches Fundraising Goal

Skatepark of Baltimore raised $82,000 to help leverage a $75,000 grant from the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks to build a skatepark in Hampden. 

"Online fundraising probably brought in $10,000 from skaters and parents of skaters," Stephanie Murdock, Skatepark of Baltimore president, said.

She said that officials from Skatepark of Baltimore will be meeting with the department on Friday to discuss a timeline for building the skatepark.

At the beginning of May, Skatepark of Baltimore still by the end of the month to leverage a matching grant from the city. The nonprofit, which is dedicated to building skateparks in the area, had already from the Tony Hawk Foundation.

But through donations collected at local businesses and through small donations online, the organization has pulled together the necessary funds to build a 16,000 square foot concrete skatepark in .

Murdock, who has been working for seven years to build the skatepark, said the fundraising became a family affair. Her extended family pulled together to make a $7,000 donation.

In fact, she said her dad became so excited about the process that he would shine a light to mail sent to her at his house to see if he could find out if it was a donation or not.

"They've seen me working this project, so I think they wanted to see me done with it as much as I wanted to get this thing built," Murdock said.
