UnitedHealthcare Supporting Local Farmers' Markets to Promote Healthy Eating and Healthy Living

Local farmers markets to provide healthy eating tips, healthy cooking demonstrations from local chefs and wellness education and resources

UnitedHealthcare will support several local farmers’ markets throughout the month of August to promote a healthy lifestyle. UnitedHealthcare representatives and experts will be on hand to provide wellness and nutrition education as well as healthy eating tips and resources. Local chefs will also provide healthy cooking demonstrations.

Maryland ranked 16th in the nation for overall health, and 28 percent of Maryland adults are considered obese, according to the 2014 America’s Health Rankings® report. Thirty-two percent of all U.S children are overweight or obese, and most will go on to become obese adults.

Farmers markets offer accessible healthy foods and resources to the local community by allowing residents to lead and live a happier, healthier and more active lifestyle. Healthy and nutritious food can be difficult to access in some geographical areas. Farmers markets address this issue and provide a good start for healthier eating among people who are at risk of obesity, heart disease and certain cancers.
