NORTH POTOMAC, MD โ€” A 19-year-old woman was arrested after stealing a car in North Potomac Wednesday morning and then leading officers on a chase before crashing off of Clara Barton Parkway, police said.

Awa Rahman โ€” of Central Park Circle in Alexandria, Va. โ€” was charged with armed carjacking and making a false statement to a peace officer, according to authorities.

Montgomery County Police said a man was carjacked at the intersection of Amberlea Farm Drive and Dufief Mill Road shortly after midnight. Once inside his car, Rahman demanded that she be taken to Washington, D.C. Police said she then held what the victim believed to be a gun to his head and ordered him to get out of the car.

At about 12:15 a.m., an on-duty officer spotted the stolen Subaru traveling east on Darnestown Road and Muddy Branch Road and tried to stop the vehicle using lights and sirens, police said. Rahman did not comply and led police on a chase before crashing into trees on Clara Barton Parkway around Lock 7.
