9/11 Ceremony Planned At Anne Arundel County Memorial

MILLERSVILLE, MD — Anne Arundel officials, first responders and the public can gather Monday to mark the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The day will be observed by the Anne Arundel County Fire and Police Departments with a moment of silence and wreath-laying at the Anne Arundel County 9/11 Memorial. A brief ceremony is set for 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 11.

The ceremony commemorates the 16th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, PA. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including 2,600 in the Twin Towers; among them were nearly 400 first responders.

During the ceremony, those in attendance will observe a moment of silence followed by a prayer offered by the Fire Department chaplain and a wreath laying by the County Executive Steve Schuh, fire and police chiefs in honor of those who were lost that day. State's Attorney Wes Adams is also scheduled to attend.

The memorial is located in front of police headquarters at 8495 Veterans Highway in Millersville.

The Anne Arundel County September 11th Memorial was dedicated on September 11, 2010. It provides a place of reflection to pay respect to the victims of the 2001 terror attacks. It is dedicated to all public safety personnel who responded that day and who continue to respond to the needs of our community.

Two steel beams from “Ground Zero” in lower Manhattan stand on the lawn of Anne Arundel County’s Police and Fire Department’s headquarters. The structures, first placed there in 2009, honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives on the fateful September morning. The steel beams, salvaged from the rubble of the Twin Towers, were donated to the county by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
