Carjacking Suspect in Fort Meade Lockdown Faces New Traffic Charges

The suspect was arrested in the Fort Meade area after reportedly crashing into the base during a chase; he's in jail in Baltimore.

The carjacking suspect who crashed into a gate at Fort Meade -- triggering a virtual lockdown of the Army base and National Security Agency campus – now faces a slew of traffic charges for the chase, authorities say.

Donate Maurice Small was found after about 15 hours hiding in the woods in the area, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Col. Brian Foley told The Baltimore Sun that Small hid from searchers in a storm drain. When he stuck his head out Thursday for a look around, he was caught.

Six Fort Meade area schools were closed Thursday because of the manhunt, and only essential personnel reported to work while police searched for the carjacking suspect. The National Security Agency based at the Army base issued a “code orange” so only essential personnel went to work while police searched for Small.

Police say Small crashed a stolen car near an unmanned gate at Fort Meade following a carjacking and police chase in Baltimore. The suspect then bailed out of the car and fled the scene.

When Anne Arundel County Police officers in the Hanover area tried to stop the vehicle, Small reportedly sped away and led officers on a 4.5-mile pursuit. Near Rockenbach Road the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a fence. The driver then jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot.

Anne Arundel County Police cited Small on these traffic charges:

  • Driving suspended
  • Attempt to elude uniform police
  • Attempt to elude uniform police on foot
  • Driving revoked
  • Turning off lights to avoid detection
  • Reckless driving
  • Negligent driving
  • Driving off roadway while passing vehicle
  • Failure to stop at red light
  • Failure to drive right of center
  • Failure to obey traffic control device
  • Failure to stop before right turn
  • Excessive speed

Small was served his Anne Arundel County traffic warrant and is incarcerated in Baltimore. He is being held on no-bail status because of Baltimore’s criminal charges and has a $500,000 bail on the Anne Arundel County traffic warrants.
