Dry Christmas Tree Sparks Severn House Fire

Anne Arundel County Fire officials say a space heater likely set a dry tree on fire Monday night, no injuries were reported.

SEVERN, MD — A space heater likely started a dry Christmas tree on fire Monday night, which caused an estimated $50,000 damage to a Severn house.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department says the house fire in the 1100 block of Thompson Avenue was reported about 6:45 p.m. A neighbor called 911 after seeing flames on the first floor and hearing smoke alarms.

Firefighters found smoke and fire on the first floor of the two-story single-family home. The fire was brought under control in less than 15 minutes.

None of the home’s residents were home at the time of the fire; no injuries were reported.

Fire investigators say the cause of the fire is accidental and likely began when a dry Christmas tree was set ablaze by a space heater.
