"Our Town" Performance - Archbishop Spalding HS

Students at Archbishop Spalding transform into the citizens of "Our Town" as they perform the famous play by Thornton Wilder.

First published and produced in 1938, the Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece details the lives of two families in Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, in the early 20th Century. "Our Town" showcases the relationship of two children - George Gibbs (played by Jordan Silver) and Emily Webb (played by Lydia Ramsey). Underlying the events of their lives - marriages, births, and deaths - is a hope for something more, a transcendental experience unique to the human condition.

When the play was first written and performed, the U.S. was experiencing life between the Great Depression and World War II. Although uncertain times and fear characterized the period, Wilder focuses the play on the facets of the human experience which testify to the strength and endurance of the human spirit.
