Fatal Hit-And-Run Driver Tracked Down By Witness: Police

A man changing a flat tire on a bus on Route 295 was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Sunday, Maryland State Police said.

HANOVER, MD — A man changing a flat tire on a bus on Route 295 in the Hanover area was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Sunday, Maryland State Police said. A witness may have led officers to the fleeing driver. Police have not released the names of any of those involved so far.

The possible hit-and-run driver was questioned Sunday night as Maryland State Police continue their investigation into a fatal crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Anne Arundel County. The victim is not being identified until family has been notified. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A possible suspect is being questioned by troopers at the Glen Burnie Barrack. The individual is not being identified until charges are filed, state police said.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday, troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack were dispatched to a reported crash on northbound Rt. 295, north of Rt. 100. Troopers found a commercial passenger bus on the right shoulder of the highway.

The passenger bus had a flat tire and was parked on the highway's shoulder. Passengers on the bus had already been transferred to another bus and continued on their trip.

Authorities say the victim was changing the tire on the bus and was struck by a passing vehicle which did not stop. A witness followed the suspected hit-and-run vehicle, while providing information to police.

The suspect stopped later and fled on foot, but was apprehended by police officers assisting from the Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the Anne Arundel County Police Department. The suspect was then transported to the Glen Burnie Barrack.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating. Consultation will be made with the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding charges.
