Local Teachers Rock Out When School's Out

Proving that even the most mild-mannered of elementary school music teachers can have a wild side, local educators Kurt Hoffman and Rob Bosch spend their spare time playing with Legacy, a hard rock and metal band that the pair began a little more than a year ago.

“Rob has been trying to get me to do this for about four years,” said Hoffman. “I'm so busy with other activities that I had been putting it off, but I'm so glad we started the band. I'm having the time of my life.”

Legacy described themselves as a cover band that plays songs by artists who have had a prominent role in the legacy of hard rock and heavy metal.

“My first concert was Judas Priest and Great White,” Hoffman said. “All of us are deeply rooted in this music.”

The band plays songs from '70s and '80s bands such as Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin, Motley Crue and Skid Row, as well as some more contemporary bands from the '90s.

“We throw in some Incubus or Alice in Chains,” Hoffman said. “We try to throw in some good-time, party music like Van Halen as well.”

Hoffman and Bosch have been enjoying their summer off from teaching and have invested more in the band now that they have more time on their hands.

“We have some nice hooks in the water for a lot of gigs this summer,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman teaches general music and chorus at Jessup Elementary School, while Bosch is employed at , handling the band and strings classes. The band is rounded out by Chris Davenport, an apprentice steamfitter, and Dave Biddle, who works at a music store in Severna Park.

All band members have local roots, residing in Glen Burnie, Dundalk, Baltimore City and Severna Park.

“We are all from the area,” Hoffman said. “Rob was even a graduate of the Glen Burnie High School's class of 1995. We have all lived in the area for a while and spend all of our time here.”

“As a beginning band, we have a big following of friends and contacts,” Hoffman said. “We have a heavier following in places like Glen Burnie because we have done so many gigs there.”

Legacy's next gig will be in Glen Burnie at the Crossroads Tavern this Saturday evening.

“We would love for some new faces to come out and check us out,” said Hoffman. “We have a lot of fun while we're performing and the crowd has a great time.”
