LAUREL, MD — A male was shot and hospitalized Friday during a fight at a Laurel basketball court, the Anne Arundel County Police Department said.

The victim told officers that he was playing basketball at Bacontown Park, located at 3601 Whiskey Bottom Road, when a fight broke out around 9 p.m. A press release said the victim ran toward his vehicle to leave, but he reported that one of the fight participants started shooting a handgun indiscriminately.

The victim then took himself to a hospital in a neighboring jurisdiction, authorities said.

Detectives from that unidentified jurisdiction could not immediately interview the victim because of his condition, the release said. That delayed the report to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, which has jurisdiction over the area where the shooting happened.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department said it went to the crime scene Saturday around 3 p.m. and found several pieces of evidence. Officers are still investigating.
