Shots Fired Near Vigil For Thanksgiving Homicide Victim: Police

Loved ones gathered to remember the victim of a Thanksgiving shooting, but the vigil turned violent, Anne Arundel County police said.

SEVERN, MD — Loved ones and police officers gathered in Severn to remember Louis Guy Newman III at a Sunday afternoon vigil. The 20-year-old Glen Burnie man died after a triple shooting at a Thanksgiving football game, police said.

That ceremony turned violent around 2:55 p.m. when officers in attendance heard the sound of gunshots, an incident report noted. Police added that they ran toward the noise and found a man firing bullets into the air.

Officers told the man to put his .32-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver on the ground, and he complied, the report added. Police then arrested the suspect, identified as Mark Anthony Artison.

The 30-year-old Severn man faces these felonious charges:

  • Possessing a firearm despite being convicted of a previous felony
  • Having a gun on him while also committing a drug offense

Artison is up against the following misdemeanors:

  • Carrying a loaded handgun
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Disorderly conduct
  • Illegal firearm possession
  • Second-degree assault
  • Resisting or interfering with an arrest
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Police also charged Artison with firing a gun, which isn't a felony or a misdemeanor.

A judge released Artison on recognizance on Monday. He will next appear in court on Dec. 23 for a preliminary hearing. The case does not yet list a trial date.
