Historically Black College Fair Planned At Milford Mill

OWINGS MILLS-REISTERSTOWN, MD - From Baltimore County Public Schools: More than 800 registered students will have the opportunity to meet representatives from 14 historically black colleges and universities at the Mid-Atlantic HBCU-BCPS Instant Admissions College Fair at Milford Mill Academy.

The college fair is Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Milford Mill Academy, 3800 Washington Ave., 21244.

“What a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn more about nearby college opportunities available,” BCPS Interim Superintendent Verletta White said. “Our students have worked so hard to prepare for their futures, and we know they are ready for success after they graduate from high school.”

Students from 20 BCPS high schools are registered to attend.

“My school counseling chair, Ken Berlett, has been committed to improving opportunities for our minority students to get into colleges,” Milford Mill Academy Principal Kyria Joseph sad. “Many of our staff graduated from HBCUs and have benefitted from this experience. I am a proud Morgan State alumni.”

The following HBCUs are participating in the college fair:

· Bowie State University

· Cheyney University

· Coppin State University

· Delaware State University

· Hampton University

· Howard University

· Lincoln University

· Morgan State University

· Norfolk State University

· University of the District of Columbia

· University of Maryland, Eastern Shore

· Virginia State University

· Virginia Union University

· West Virginia State University

At least nine of the colleges and universities present will offer on-site instant admissions. Hundreds of students will depart the event with college acceptances.

The morning session will feature appointments and instant admissions opportunities for Grade 12 students. In the afternoon, more than 300 Grade 11 students will participate in a traditional college fair setting.

“I am overwhelmed by the amazing support of our community, volunteers and sponsors,” Berlett, the event organizer, said. “It is the goal of every BCPS school counselor to identify the greatest needs of students and make every effort possible to close achievement gaps. For my students, and many other BCPS students of color, that greatest disparity has been the pursuit of higher education beyond our doors.”
