In 1986, Owings Mills Mall Opened with Fanfare (Rare Archival Video)

When it opened, news reports show it was heralded as the start of an upscale renaissance for Owings Mills and Baltimore County.

When Owings Mills Mall opened in 1986, newscasters lauded its marble floor—imported from France—trumpets sounded, and a high-class fashion show proceeded down one of the mall's stairwells.

Television news reports, as shown in the accompanying rare archival footage, showed the mall was supposed to be an upscale fashion destination. But 25 years later it has been classified as a "dead mall" by DeadMalls.com, a website that tracks "the history of the malls as well as their nature, whether thriving or declining, and the impact of time and competition on these establishments," the website said.

This is part of a series examining the Owings Mills Mall and its deterioration as it approaches its 25th anniversary on July 30. .
