Jemicy School's Penny War Raises Money for Dyslexia Tutoring Program

Students at Jemicy collected more than $1,400 in two weeks for tutoring program that helps those in Baltimore City.

In December, Jemicy Lower Middle School (LMS) conducted a Penny War, the purpose of which was to raise money to donate to The Dyslexia Tutoring Program (DTP), which provides tutoring services to students in Maryland, especially those in Baltimore City.

Each group, JE through Y, competed to collect the most pennies, while at the same time, trying to sabotage the others by adding larger coins or bills. Math classes built lessons around counting the coins at the end of the two-week competition period.

The school raised a total of $1,422.87. The winner of Penny Wars was C Group, with a collection totaling $378.67. Marcy Kolodny, head of DTP (and a former Jemicy development director), was presented with a check on the LMS Campus and thanked the students for their efforts and worthy mission.
