The Kansas-based church, known for picketing funerals of fallen soldiers and its belief that God is punishing America for tolerating homosexuality, was protesting at Northwestern High School Tuesday to voice objections over what it describes as a "pervert-run" school.

"I'm not much of a protestor, but they're idiots," Nagel said. "Just because the Bill of Rights says they can do something doesn't mean it's a good idea."

She and Blessing stood with what she estimated to be about 50 other people holding mostly homemade signs. The crowd chanted and waved its signs until about 10 a.m., when the Westboro group left. A guy in front of Nagel sang "Happy Trails" as the group packed its signs up.

"A Hyattsville [garbage truck] pulled up just after the church left," she said. "We were kidding around that their ride showed up."
