Oliver Withdraws Controversial Metro Centre Legislation

A bill that would exempt developers of the Metro Centre in Owings Mills from certain regulations was withdrawn by Baltimore County Councilman Ken Oliver after criticism from colleagues and the community.

Baltimore County Councilman Ken Oliver withdrew legislation Thursday that would have given developers of the in Owings Mills various regulatory exemptions, The Baltimore Sun reports.

He plans to reintroduce the legislation, which would have given the project exceptions in building sizes, parking, open space and signage, on June 4, according to The Sun.

Oliver did not have enough votes to pass the bill, and community members opposed the idea.

A Reisterstown resident sent a letter to the editor to The Sun, calling out Metro Centre developer David S. Brown Enterprises and its chairman Howard Brown.

“What Mr. Brown is attempting to do is get Mr. Oliver to introduce a bill to bypass public scrutiny of his most recent proposal, and this is just wrong,” wrote Reisterstown resident J. Michael Collins.
