Owings Mills Boy with New Hands Throws First Pitch at O's Game

Zion Harvey, the 9-year-old who had double hand transplants last year, made a special appearance this week at Camden Yards.

BALTIMORE, MD — An Owings Mills boy threw the first pitch at Camden Yards Tuesday night using hands that are still relatively new.

Zion Harvey, 9, received two hands last summer in a double hand transplant procedure that the hospital said was the first of its kind for a child. Harvey had his hands amputated when he was 2 due to sepsis, an infection in the bloodstream.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which performed the surgery on Harvey's hands last summer, said that it may take two years of physical therapy for him to get acclimated.

At Tuesday's game—one year after the operation—Harvey threw the ceremonial opening pitch for the Orioles to Adam Jones before the team's game against the Texas Rangers.
